Description
Utilize your cooking apples to create a delectable crumble, a quintessential British comfort dessert. Highlighting succulent Bramleys and an oat-based topping, this recipe offers a cozy treat. For a twist, consider infusing the apples with ½ tsp of ground cinnamon or ginger, or replacing oats with chopped nuts.
Instructions
- Heat the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C.
- Place caster sugar, Bramley apples, vanilla & 1½ tbsp of water in saucepan & gently cook for a few mins, until the apples have softened. Taste & add a little more sugar if needed, depending on how tart the apples are. Transfer to greased ovenproof dish.
- Place demerara sugar, flour & butter in to a mixing bowl & rub with your fingertips, until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the oats. Scatter on to apples & then sprinkle extra sugar on top. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until golden & bubbling. Serve with custard, cream (or) ice cream.
Freezing & defrosting guidelines
- Allow to cool completely. Wrap well in clingfilm & tin foil (to prevent freezer burn) & freeze for up to 3 months.
- Loosen tin foil & clingfilm but leave to defrost in packaging at room temperature for several hours before serving. If you wish to serve baked goods warm, place on baking sheet for 10 mins in moderate oven.

- Vanilla - 1 tsp
- Self-raising flour - 110g
- Demerara sugar- 40g (plus 1 tbsp for sprinkling)
- Cold salted butter - 40g (diced)
- Rolled oats - 2 tbsp
